Problem Solving

In math, we use a 4-step approach to problem solving.

Step 1: Understand the Problem

-Read the problem carefully
-Identify what the question is
-Restate the problem in your own words
-Identify the information needed to solve the
problem, and determine if any of it is missing

Step 2: Make a Plan

You may have to choose several problem solving strategies such as:

-try a simpler problem___________-make a table
-make an organized list__________-look for a pattern
-act it out_____________________-guess and check
-use logical reasoning___________-work backward
-use an equation_______________-make a picture or diagram

Step 3: Carry Out the Plan

-Solve the problem using the strategies you selected
-You may need to change strategies

Step 4: Look Back

-Check tht you answered the question being asked
-Check that your solution seems reasonable
-Check that your work is acccurate
-Try to find another method to solve the problem
and compare the results

Students can use CUCC to break down the question. CUCC means:

*Circle the direction words.

*Underline important information for the direction words.

*Count the number of things you have to do.

*Check to see if you answered all questions and gave evidence for each.
